الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part.
Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.
When to Read
This dua is recited when wearing new clothes, be it a shirt, trousers, a scarf, or any new item of clothing. It's a beautiful way to begin the experience of wearing something new by acknowledging Allah's grace.
How to Read
Upon putting on a new garment, one should stand, and facing the Qiblah if possible, recite this dua with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude. It's a personal moment of reflection and supplication. Some scholars suggest wearing the right side first and then the left, as with other garments, and then reciting this dua.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua after wearing a new garment is a powerful expression of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and gratitude. It teaches us to attribute all blessings, including the provision of clothing which is a fundamental necessity for modesty and protection, to Allah alone. By acknowledging that the ability to acquire and wear the clothing comes from Him, we ward off arrogance and foster humility. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, guiding us to remember Allah in our daily actions and appreciate His continuous favors.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: When Allah's Messenger ﷺ wore a new garment, he would mention its name, whether it was a turban, a shirt or a cloak. Then he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi kafaani wa 'awwalani' (Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me and provided for me). Then he would say: 'A'udhu billahi min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lah' (I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of it and the evil of what it was made for). And when he took off a garment, he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi kafaani wa 'awwalani' (Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me and provided for me). And when he took off a garment, he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi kafaani wa 'awwalani' (Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me and provided for me). (Note: The text provided in the original hadith is slightly varied across collections, with the version focusing on provision and strength being commonly cited for new clothes.) Sunan Abi Dawud (4024) and Sunan At-Tirmidhi (1771) narrate from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ would say when he wore a new garment: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi kafaani wa 'awwalani' (Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me and provided for me). And when he took off a garment, he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi kafaani wa 'awwalani' (Praise be to Allah Who has sufficed me and provided for me). However, other narrations, like the one from 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), mention: 'When Allah's Messenger ﷺ wore a new garment, he would mention its name, whether it was a turban, a shirt, or a cloak, then he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi kafaani wa 'awwalani'. Then he would say: 'A'udhu billahi min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lah'.
