Dua for Wearing New Clothes: Seeking Allah's Protection

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, though I had no power nor strength (myself).

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when wearing a new garment. It's not just about the physical covering, but the spiritual protection and gratitude that comes with it. Wearing something new can sometimes draw the eye, and this dua acknowledges Allah (SWT) as the true source of the provision, thereby deflecting any potential envy or ill-will.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with gratitude as you put on a new item of clothing. Feel the weight of the garment, and reflect on Allah's (SWT) blessings. It's best recited immediately after putting on the new garment, before stepping out or engaging in activities where it might be seen.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit of this dua is recognizing Allah's (SWT) bounty and acknowledging that all provision comes from Him alone. This act of humility and gratitude can serve as a powerful shield against the evil eye and envy. By attributing the new clothing to Allah's grace rather than one's own effort, we invite His protection and blessings. It instills a sense of thankfulness, which is a cornerstone of a believer's life, and keeps the heart focused on the Creator, not the creation.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When one of you wears a new garment, he should say: Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin (All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, though I had no power nor strength (myself)). And when a garment wears out, he should say: Allahumma laka al-hamdu kama kasawtanihi (O Allah, to You is praise, just as You have clothed me with it).
