Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah, Who clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited immediately after putting on a new garment, whether it's a shirt, trousers, or any other piece of clothing. It's a beautiful moment to acknowledge Allah's blessing as you adorn yourself.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely with gratitude in your heart. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua as a way to express our reliance on Allah and to seek His protection. It's a simple yet profound acknowledgment of His favors. You can say it just after you've finished dressing.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we express profound gratitude to Allah for His blessings. It reminds us that all provisions come from Him and that our own strength is insignificant without His help. This utterance also serves as a protection. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that wearing a new garment and reciting this dua earns the reciter Allah's forgiveness for past sins, as stated in some narrations that follow this hadith. It’s a way to start using the new item in a state of obedience and remembrance, seeking Allah's barakah (blessing) in it.

‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment, and lives a praiseworthy life, and dies a martyr, and is saved from the trials of the grave, and is saved from the Fire, and his Lord looks at him with a look of mercy, he will not be punished for any of his sins. Whoever wears a new garment, and eats a praiseworthy meal, and lives a praiseworthy life, and dies a martyr, and is saved from the trials of the grave, and is saved from the Fire, and his Lord looks at him with a look of mercy, he will not be punished for any of his sins. (The narrator mentioned a similar wording with the praise of eating and drinking). Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a gharib hadith. It has been narrated from Abu Ishaq through another chain. ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment, and says: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ (All praise is due to Allah, Who clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself), then his previous sins are forgiven.' (Tirmidhi graded this part as Hasan Gharib).
