Dua for Wearing New Clothes: Seeking Allah's Covering from Shame and Embarrassment

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1767

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from my part.

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa-razaqanihi min ghairi haulin minni wa la quwwah.

When to Read

This dua is recited when wearing a new garment. It's a beautiful moment to pause and reflect, not just on the new covering, but on Allah's countless blessings that often go unnoticed. Imagine feeling the new fabric, and with that sensation, turning your heart towards the One who provided it.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with an understanding heart, as you put on a new piece of clothing – be it a shirt, trousers, a scarf, or any other garment. It's a beautiful practice to say it after you've fully worn the garment. The key is intention and gratitude.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple yet profound dua encapsulates our dependence on Allah. It reminds us that our ability to acquire possessions, including clothing, is not due to our own might, but a pure gift from our Creator. By reciting this, we acknowledge His provision, seek protection from the potential arrogance that new possessions can sometimes bring, and ask for Allah to cover our `awrah` (that which is required to be covered) and protect us from shame and embarrassment, both in this life and the next.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: When the Prophet (ﷺ) wore a new garment, he would mention its name, be it a shirt or a turban, and then say: 'Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi haulin minni wa la quwwah.' (All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from my part.) (Sunan Abu Dawud 4023, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767 - Hasan)
