Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah, Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any power or strength on my part.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after putting on a new garment, whether it's for a special occasion like a wedding or Eid, or simply a new item of clothing for daily wear. The act of acknowledging Allah's provision for even something as basic as clothing is a beautiful way to start using it, seeking His blessing upon it and expressing gratitude for His bounty.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and gratitude after you have fully put on the new garment. It's a moment to pause and reflect on Allah's blessings. Feel the texture of the new clothing and connect the physical comfort it provides with the spiritual comfort of remembering your Creator. It's also highly recommended to mention the name of Allah before starting any action, and this dua encapsulates that principle beautifully.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon wearing new clothes brings numerous benefits: 1. **Gratitude and Humility:** It acknowledges that all provision comes from Allah alone, fostering humility and preventing arrogance that might stem from acquiring new possessions. 2. **Seeking Allah's Blessing:** By attributing the garment to Allah's provision without one's own effort, we seek His blessing (barakah) in wearing it. 3. **Protection:** The act of remembering Allah is a form of seeking His protection and guidance in using the new item. 4. **Reward:** As with all remembrance of Allah (dhikr), there is immense reward. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of thanking Allah for His blessings, and this dua is a perfect expression of that.

‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: > If any one of you puts on a new garment, then he should say: > الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ > (Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.) > > And if any one of you wears clothes that have been worn out, then he should say: > الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي يَكْفِينِي وَيُؤْوِينِي > (Alhamdulillah alladhi yakfeeni wa yu'weeni.) > > And if any one of his food is something other than milk, then he should say: > اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ > (Allahumma barik lana feehi wa zidna minhu.) > > And if any one of you eats, then he should say: > اللَّهُمَّ أَطْعِمْنِي وَأَطْعِمْهُ > (Allahumma at'imni wa at'imh.) — Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1771 (graded as Hasan)
