Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawood 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is for Allah Who has clothed me this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin

When to Read

This dua is recited specifically when wearing a new garment. It’s a beautiful way to begin the act of wearing something new, whether it’s a shirt, a pair of trousers, a dress, or any other item of clothing.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity as you put on the new garment. It’s an acknowledgment of Allah’s blessing. Understanding the meaning – that the ability to acquire and wear this new clothing is purely from Allah – helps in reciting it with genuine humility.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful antidote to the pride that new possessions can sometimes bring. By acknowledging that Allah is the source of this blessing, we train ourselves to see it as a gift, not a result of our own merit. This fosters gratitude and keeps our hearts humble. It reminds us that everything we have, including our ability to adorn ourselves, is from our Creator.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudree that when Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to wear a new garment, he would mention its name (like a turban, a shirt, or a cloak) and then say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ (Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin) 'All praise is for Allah Who has clothed me this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.' And when he removed a garment, he would say: اللَّهُمَّ زِدْنِي وَزِدْنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ (Allahumma zidni wa zidni min fadlik) 'O Allah, grant me more and increase me from Your bounty.'
