Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4024

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha-th-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when putting on new or any clothing. While it is a general dua for wearing clothes, we can internalize its meaning when preparing for a situation that requires reliance on Allah and a boost of confidence, such as public speaking. Before stepping out to deliver a speech, or even when preparing to speak in a meeting, consciously recite this dua. The acknowledgment of Allah's provision and your own lack of inherent power is a powerful way to humble yourself and seek His strength.

How to Read

This dua should be recited immediately after putting on the garment, ideally before moving to other activities. The sincerity of the heart is key; truly feel the dependence on Allah (SWT) as you acknowledge His favor in providing the means to be clothed. For public speaking, visualize wearing your clothes as a blessing from Allah, and as you say the dua, imagine His strength and courage filling you, enabling you to speak with clarity and confidence.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit of this dua is acknowledging Allah's blessings and recognizing that all provision and ability comes from Him alone. It fosters humility and gratitude. When applied to situations like public speaking, reciting this dua reminds us that true strength and eloquence are gifts from Allah. By attributing the ability to speak well to Him, we are asking Him to grant us that ability, to remove our anxieties, and to fill us with the courage needed to convey our message effectively. It's a way of seeking divine support for a challenging task.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) put on a new garment, he would mention its name, like a turban or a shirt or a cloak, and say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي وَأَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي حَيَاتِي. Then he would say: أَبْلُبَلِي خَلَفًا، أَبْلُبَلِي خَلَفًا. (A new garment wears out, and is replaced by another.) And when he put on a ring of iron, he would wear it on his right hand, and when he took it off, he would take it off from his left hand. And when he put on a ring of gold, he would wear it on his left hand, and when he took it off, he would take it off from his right hand. And when he put on his shoes, he would begin with his right foot, and when he took them off, he would begin with his left foot. And when he put on his shirt, he would begin with his right side. And when he took it off, he would take it off from his left side. And when he put on his turban, he would let its ends hang down between his shoulders. Sunan Abi Dawud 4024. The version quoted is commonly cited for wearing clothes in general.
