Dua for Wearing Clothes: Seeking Allah's Veil of Honor and Dignity

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side.

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.

When to Read

This dua is recited upon wearing new clothes, or any garment. It's a beautiful moment to pause and acknowledge that the ability to adorn ourselves and the provision of clothing are blessings directly from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). Think about it: even the simple act of choosing and putting on clothes can become an act of worship if we imbue it with gratitude and remembrance of our Creator.

How to Read

Upon putting on a new garment, or any garment, pause for a moment. Feel the fabric, acknowledge the comfort and coverage it provides. Then, sincerely recite this dua with the understanding that this is an expression of your dependence on Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and gratitude for His blessings. It's not just about reciting words; it's about connecting your heart to the meaning behind them.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua after wearing a new garment carries a significant reward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever wears a garment and says: Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwatin, will have all his previous sins forgiven.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767 - deemed Hasan). This teaches us that even seemingly small acts of remembrance can carry immense spiritual benefits, purifying us and drawing us closer to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). It also fosters humility, reminding us that all strength and provision come from Him alone, not our own efforts.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wore a new garment, he would mention its name, be it a shirt or a turban, and then say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي وَأَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي حَيَاتِي (Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani ma uwari bihi 'awrati wa atajammalu bihi fi hayati - All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with that by which I cover my private parts and adorn myself in my life). Then he would say: (and the text continues with the dua mentioned in the entry: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ - Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwatin). (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767. Tirmidhi said: Gharib). The hadith regarding the forgiveness of sins is found in Sunan Abi Dawud 4023 and attributed to Hasan by some scholars due to supporting narrations.
