Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after putting on any new or old garment. It's an acknowledgment of Allah's bounty in providing clothing, a basic necessity for modesty, protection, and adornment.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and contemplation. As you put on the garment, feel the texture and the comfort it provides, and let your heart acknowledge that this is solely from Allah's grace. The emphasis is on gratitude and humility.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua cultivates deep gratitude towards Allah for His blessings, reminding us that even the ability to acquire and wear clothes is from Him, not our own doing. It directly counteracts arrogance and the feeling of self-sufficiency, which can lead to hypocrisy. By acknowledging our reliance on Allah, we purify our intentions and actions, fostering humility and sincerity in our faith.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: When one of you puts on a garment, he should mention Allah's name. Then, when he takes it off, he should mention Allah's name. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever wears a garment and says: 'Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin' (Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself), then all his previous sins will be forgiven. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah, what about the future ones? He said: 'And what comes after that – there are also protections for the future.' [Reported by Abu Dawud 4023, Tirmidhi 1767. Tirmidhi said it is Hasan Gharib.]
