Dua for Wearing Clothes: Seeking Allah's Protection from Envy and Ill-Will

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4022

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa-razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa-la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after putting on new clothes. It's a beautiful way to begin your day or any activity when dressed in fresh attire, acknowledging that this blessing comes solely from Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere gratitude and humility. As you put on the garment, pause to reflect on Allah's provision. The act of thanking Allah for clothing acknowledges it as a blessing, not just a material possession, and invites His protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua expresses profound gratitude to Allah for providing the means to cover ourselves, recognizing that it's a gift and not earned by our own might. By acknowledging Allah's grace, we seek His continued protection. It turns a mundane act into an act of worship, fostering humility and warding off arrogance. This acknowledgement also invites Allah's blessings and helps protect us from envy and ill-will that can arise from outward appearances, as we attribute the blessing to its true Source.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When one of you puts on a garment, he should say: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ (Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa-razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa-la quwwah). And when one of you takes off a garment, he should say: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ (Bismillah). (Reported by Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi and graded Hasan).
