Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4024

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself.

When to Read

This dua should be recited immediately after putting on any new garment, whether it's a shirt, trousers, a scarf, or any other item of clothing. It's a moment of reflection as you dress yourself for the day or for a specific occasion.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with an understanding of its meaning. As you put on the garment, pause for a moment and internalize the gratitude to Allah. The feeling should be one of deep appreciation for His provision, recognizing that any ability to obtain and wear the clothing is from Him alone.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it expresses profound gratitude to Allah for the blessing of clothing, which is a basic necessity for protection and modesty. Secondly, and crucially, it guards the wearer against two significant spiritual ailments: arrogance and complacency. By acknowledging that the clothing and the means to acquire it are from Allah and not due to personal strength or power ('ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah'), one maintains humility. This prevents the heart from becoming puffed up with pride over possessions, which is a common pitfall. It reminds us that our provision is from our Creator, fostering reliance on Him and keeping spiritual complacency at bay.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to put on a garment, he would mention its name (e.g. a shirt or a cloak), and then say: 'All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this and provided it for me, without any strength or power from myself.' He would then forbid his companions to wear the deceased's clothes as a keepsake.
