Dua Upon Waking: Seeking Allah's Strength to Uphold Trusts and Fulfill Obligations

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

When to Read

Imagine waking up, the new day stretching before you with its tasks, responsibilities, and the promises you’ve made – to yourself, to others, and to Allah. This powerful dua, taught by our beloved Prophet ﷺ, is ideal for reciting right after you wake up, before you step into the demands of your day. It’s a shield and a source of strength, setting your intention to face your obligations with resolve and relying on Allah for aid.

How to Read

Recite this dua with presence of mind, understanding each phrase and what you are seeking refuge from. Let your heart acknowledge your human vulnerabilities – the potential for anxiety, the struggle with laziness, the weight of commitments. Then, consciously place your reliance on Allah, knowing He alone can protect you from these weaknesses and empower you to fulfill your trusts. You can say it aloud or silently, but the key is the heartfelt intention and understanding.

Virtues & Benefits

By seeking refuge in Allah from anxiety and sorrow, you are asking for peace of mind, which is essential for clear judgment and fulfilling tasks. Protection from weakness and laziness directly translates to strength and diligence, enabling you to follow through on your commitments without procrastination or faltering. When we seek refuge from the 'burden of debt,' it encompasses not just financial debt but also the moral and spiritual 'debts' of unfulfilled promises and trusts. This dua is a potent tool for cultivating **trustworthiness** and **integrity**, empowering you to be someone whose word can be relied upon. It grounds you in reliance on Allah, ensuring that even when faced with overwhelming tasks or people, your strength comes from Him.
