Dua Upon Waking: Seeking Allah's Protection from the Evils of the Day

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي فِي جَسَدِي وَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي وَأَذِنَ لِي بِذِكْرِهِ.

All praise is for Allah, who restored my health in my body, returned my soul to me, and permitted me to remember Him.

Alhamdulillahilladhi 'aafani fi jasadi wa radda 'alayya ruhi wa adhina li bi dhikrih.

When to Read

This is the first thing you should say right after waking up. Before you even get out of bed, acknowledge Allah's immense blessings. Think about it – you were unconscious in sleep, and He brought you back to consciousness. Your body might have ached or felt unwell yesterday, but He has granted you health. This isn't just about reciting words; it's about a moment of sincere gratitude for the gift of life and well-being each new day brings.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude as soon as you become aware you are awake. Take a moment to feel the meaning of each word. It's a beautiful way to start your day, acknowledging Allah as the source of all your blessings, from the physical health of your body to the very spirit that animates you.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is powerful because it encompasses several fundamental aspects of our relationship with Allah: gratitude, recognition of His power over life and death (even in sleep), and the ability to worship Him. By praising Allah immediately upon waking, we set a tone of devotion for the entire day. It reminds us that every breath, every beat of our heart, is from Him, and our ability to even remember Him is a gift that requires thankful acknowledgment. It's like receiving a fresh lease on life and beginning it with His praise.
