اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُوْرُ

All praise is for Allah, who brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Al-hamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilaihin-nushoor.

When to Read

Recite this immediately upon waking up, as the very first thing you do. This dua sets the tone for your day, acknowledging Allah's power and prompting a mindful start to your activities.

How to Read

Say this with sincere reflection. Consider the blessing of being granted another day to live, to worship, and to strive for good. It's a moment of gratitude and a commitment to making the most of this new opportunity.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of gratitude for the gift of life and a recognition of our ultimate return to Allah. Waking with this sentiment fosters a sense of responsibility to use the time granted for righteous deeds, counteracting lethargy and a feeling of wasted time. It's the perfect antidote to starting the day with a sense of purpose, reminding us that each moment is a chance to earn Allah's pleasure.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you wakes up, he should say: Al-hamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wal-nushooru ilayh (All praise is for Allah, who brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the return/resurrection).' Another narration states: 'When one of you wakes up, let him say: Al-hamdulillahilladhi 'afani fi jasadi wa radda 'alayya ruhi wa adhina bi dhikrihi (All praise is for Allah, who granted me well-being in my body, returned my soul to me, and permitted me to remember Him).' While the first narration focuses on the core acknowledgement of life and resurrection, the second highlights well-being and remembrance. Both serve to start the day with gratitude and mindfulness. For the specific context of urgency for good deeds, reflecting on the fact that we were 'brought back to life' after a metaphorical 'death' (sleep) is a powerful prompt.
