Dua Upon Waking: Seeking Allah's Protection from Backbiting and Gossip

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5063

All praise is due to Allah Who revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this day and the goodness of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what follows it. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire. O Allah, keep me away from falsehood and its people, and from backbiting and its people, and from tale-bearing and its people, and from lying and its people.

Al-ḥamdulillāhil-ladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilaihin-nushūr. Allāhumma innī as'aluka khayra hādhāl-yawmi wa khayra mā baʿdahu, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharri hādhāl-yawmi wa sharri mā baʿdahu. Allāhumma innī as'aluka al-jannata wa aʿūdhu bika minan-nār. Allāhumma jannibnī al-bāṭila wa ahlahu, wal-ghībata wa ahlahā, wan-namīmata wa ahlahā, wal-kidhba wa ahlahu.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua helps us start our day seeking Allah's blessings and protection. By specifically asking to be kept away from backbiting (ghibah) and tale-bearing (namimah), we are actively seeking to guard our tongues and protect our relationships. Backbiting is described as slandering your brother, and tale-bearing is spreading rumors, both of which are grave sins that can destroy trust and sow discord. Seeking Allah's help from these is a vital step in maintaining spiritual purity and a healthy community.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever wakes up saying: 'Al-ḥamdulillāhil-ladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilaihin-nushūr' (All praise is due to Allah Who revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection), it shall be an expiation for whatever was done to him during that night.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5063, Sahih). The latter part of the dua, asking for protection from falsehood, backbiting, tale-bearing, and lying, is a reflection of numerous hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against these sins and taught us to seek refuge from them. For instance, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Beware of backbiting, for backbiting is worse than adultery. For a man may commit adultery and then repent and Allah forgives him, but the backbiter will not be forgiven until his companion forgives him.' (Reported by Abu Ya'la and authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib, 1725).
