Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

All praise is for Allah Who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the return.

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatanaa wa ilahin-nushoor.

When to Read

This is the primary dua recited immediately upon waking from sleep. It's the very first thing we should say as our consciousness returns, setting a tone of gratitude and remembrance for the new day.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude. Understand that waking is a blessing from Allah, a chance to start anew. The remembrance of our return to Him also instills humility and accountability for our actions throughout the day.

Virtues & Benefits

This simple yet profound dua serves as a cornerstone of our daily practice. By starting the day with gratitude for life itself, we acknowledge Allah's power and mercy. It's a reminder that our existence is temporary and our ultimate destination is to Him, encouraging us to live consciously and accountably. This consciousness naturally extends to our interactions, prompting us to be mindful of our speech and avoid harmful acts like backbiting and slander, which are grave sins in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that a believer is not one who is deceitful or prone to backbiting.
