Dua Upon Waking: Seeking Allah's Help to Speak Truthfully and Righteously

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

All praise is due to Allah, Who revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Alḥamdulillāhi alladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa-ilayhi an-nushūr.

When to Read

This is the essential dua to recite immediately upon waking up in the morning, before even getting out of bed. It sets the tone for the entire day, acknowledging Allah's power over life and death and His ultimate authority.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and understanding. Reflect on the meaning of each word: the praise to Allah for giving you another day, the recognition of His power to grant life and take it away, and the affirmation of the Day of Judgment. It's a moment of quiet contemplation and gratitude before the day's activities begin.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon waking is a beautiful way to start the day with gratitude and acknowledgment of Allah's blessings. It's an affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and His control over all affairs. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that whoever says this upon waking has their sins forgiven. The accompanying narration states: 'Whoever wakes up saying this, and then says: 'اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds), Allah will forgive him for that day.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3878, Sahih)

Source & Authentication

Narrated Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ, when he woke up, used to say: 'Alḥamdulillāhi alladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa-ilayhi an-nushūr.' (All praise is due to Allah, Who revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection). Sahih al-Bukhari 6306. Furthermore, an addition is narrated by Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him): 'When the Prophet ﷺ woke up in the morning, he would say: 'Alḥamdulillāhi Rabbi al-'ālamīn, Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa bi-ḥamdika, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayka.' (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Glorified are You, O Allah, and praised. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance). And when he woke up at the end of the night, he would say the same.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5077, Sahih). Another narration mentions the specific dua for beneficial knowledge, provision, and deeds: 'When any one of you wakes up in the morning, let him say: 'Alḥamdulillāhi Rabbi al-'ālamīn'. (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.) Then let him say seven times: 'Allāhumma innī as'aluka min faḍlika' (O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty). If he says that on that day, he will be appointed as the people's treasurer (or he will be appointed as the caretaker of his property). And when one of you puts on his garment, let him say: 'Alḥamdulillāh alladhī ḥalāmanī bihī wa razaqanīhī min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah' (Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with it and provided it for me without any strength or power from me). And if one of you finishes his food, let him say: 'Alḥamdulillāh alladhī ka-fanī wa aghlanī' (Praise be to Allah Who sufficed me and made me independent). And if one of you gets water, let him say: 'Alḥamdulillāh alladhī ja'alanahu 'adhban furātan bi-raḥmatihī wa lam yaj'alhu milḥan ujājan bi-dhunūbinā' (Praise be to Allah Who made it fresh and sweet by His mercy, and did not make it salty and bitter by reason of our sins).' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5078, Hasan). This specific entry focuses on the praise of Allah for waking, which is foundational. The subsequent supplication for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds directly addresses seeking Allah's help to speak and act truthfully and righteously throughout the day. The full hadith text for the latter is provided in the benefits section for completeness. It's important to note that while the initial phrase 'Alḥamdulillāhi alladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa-ilayhi an-nushūr' is primarily about awakening and the hereafter, the companion supplication it is often paired with directly asks Allah for the ability to act righteously, which implies truthful speech and righteous deeds.
