Dua Upon Waking: Seeking Allah's Help to Resist Backbiting and Slander

Waking Up
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately upon waking up in the morning. It's a powerful way to set the intention for your day, asking Allah for the tools and guidance to make it productive and pleasing to Him. As you awaken, before your feet even touch the ground, make this sincere plea. It's particularly relevant when we want to guard our tongues against the sins of backbiting (ghibah) and slander (buhtan), as 'beneficial knowledge' can include understanding the gravity of these sins and seeking the wisdom to avoid them, while 'acceptable deeds' encompasses abstaining from what displeases Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention, focusing on each word. It’s best recited after you’ve fully woken up but before you engage in any worldly activities. Imagine the meaning of each request: knowledge that truly benefits you in this life and the hereafter, provision that is pure and lawful, and actions that Allah accepts from you. This act of remembrance right at the start of your day aligns your day with Allah’s pleasure.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates three crucial aspects of a blessed life. Firstly, seeking 'beneficial knowledge' (ilm nafi') is a continuous pursuit in Islam, encompassing religious understanding and worldly knowledge that serves a righteous purpose. Secondly, asking for 'good provision' (rizqan tayyiban) ensures that whatever sustenance Allah grants you is pure, lawful, and a source of strength for obedience. Thirdly, requesting 'acceptable deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) is the ultimate goal – ensuring our efforts in worship and good conduct are recognized and rewarded by Allah. By seeking these three, we naturally build a shield against sins like backbiting, as beneficial knowledge illuminates the harm of such actions, and a focus on acceptable deeds diverts us from idle talk and gossip. Allah's Messenger ﷺ taught us this dua to seek the best for our day, and by extension, to protect ourselves from what might invalidate our efforts.
