Dua Upon Waking: Seeking Allah's Help to Be Amongst the Patient and Grateful

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

All praise is due to Allah, who brought us back to life after giving us death, and to Him is the resurrection.

Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amata-na wa ilaihin-nushur.

When to Read

This is the fundamental dua to recite immediately upon waking from sleep. It's the first expression of remembrance that should greet your consciousness as you transition from unconsciousness back into the world.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude for the gift of another day. Recognize that waking is a miracle, a renewal of life granted by Allah. Pause for a moment to truly feel the meaning of 'All praise is due to Allah' before continuing with your day.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses profound gratitude for life itself, acknowledging Allah as the Giver of life and the ultimate destination. It sets a tone of reliance on Allah for the day ahead, asking for His continued blessings and guidance. While this specific hadith doesn't explicitly mention patience and gratitude *in the wording*, the act of acknowledging Allah's power over life and death and praising Him upon waking is the very foundation upon which a patient and grateful life is built. By recognizing our dependence on Him for every breath, we naturally foster patience in His decree and gratitude for His innumerable favors.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Hudhaifah: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) woke up at night, he would say: 'Allah is the Greatest! Glory be to Allah. O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, the Revealer of the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran, the Cleaver of the seed and the kernel! I seek refuge in You from the evil of every evil-doer whom You seize by the forelock. O Allah, You are the First, there is nothing before You; You are the Last, there is nothing after You; You are the Outwardly apparent, there is nothing above You; You are the Inwardly hidden, there is nothing below You. Settle our debts for us and make us rich from poverty.' And when he woke up from sleep, he would say: 'All praise is due to Allah, who brought us back to life after giving us death, and to Him is the resurrection.'
