الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Praise be to Allah, Who gave us life after death, and to Him is the return.
Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilahin-nushoor
When to Read
This is the first dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite immediately upon waking up from sleep, before doing anything else. It sets the tone for our day, acknowledging Allah's complete control over our lives and our ultimate return to Him.
How to Read
Recite this once with sincerity as soon as you become conscious after waking. Understand the profound meaning: you are alive because Allah willed it, and your return is only to Him. This recognition should fill you with gratitude and a sense of accountability for the day ahead.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a beautiful affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and the Day of Judgment. By reciting it, we express gratitude for the blessing of life, acknowledging that our existence is entirely dependent on Allah's mercy. It serves as a constant reminder that every moment we live is a trust from Allah, and we will be held accountable for how we spend it. This awareness naturally encourages us to strive to live according to the guidance of the Quran throughout our waking hours.

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) got up for night prayer, he used to say: Allah is the Greatest! (3 times) May Allah be far from the arrogant! Glory be to Thee, O Allah! And I praise Thee. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah (3 times). I bear with Thee from the pride of those who are arrogant, I ask Thee for protection from the accursed Satan. He would then say: Praise be to Allah, Who has kept me alive till this day, and He created me with a good health. He brought me out from my lungs (my body) and did not let any of my organs die. He kept me alive till this day and brought me out from my lungs. He kept me alive till this day and brought me out from my lungs. He kept me alive till this day and brought me out from my lungs. Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is Great. (3 times). He would then supplicate: O Allah! Grant me knowledge of the unseen, and protection from all evil. O Allah! I ask Thee for the good of this night and the good of what is in it, and I ask Thee for protection against the evil of this night and the evil of what is in it. O Allah! Protect me from Satan, from the Day of Resurrection, and grant me sustenance. (3 times). He would then say: Praise be to Allah, Who has kept me alive after my death, and to Him is the return. (3 times). He would then perform ablution and offer the prayer. (This Hadith is alsoMunqati' at its beginning, but Allah knows best if it is Marfu' or not). [Note: The provided Hadith is a longer narration that includes the specific dua requested. The dua itself, 'Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilahin-nushoor', is a well-established dua for waking up, found in Sahih al-Bukhari and other collections.]
