All praise is due to Allah, Who revived us after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this day and the goodness of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what follows it. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Hellfire. O Allah, I ask You to benefit me with the Great Quran, and to guide me and teach me the Quran. O Allah, make this day a day of goodness, blessing, victory, help, light, success, and guidance, and make it better than what came before it and better than what comes after it.

When to Read
This comprehensive dua is meant to be recited immediately upon waking up. It sets the tone for your entire day, seeking blessings and protection from Allah. It is particularly relevant when you know you have important decisions to make, as it directly asks for Allah's guidance, knowledge, and ability to benefit from the Quran, which is a primary source of divine counsel.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of heart. While the core part of thanking Allah for waking you is a direct Sunnah, the extensions for seeking goodness, protection, and guidance in decisions can be made as a personal supplication. Utter it in Arabic if you can, or in its translation with the same intention. Reflect on each phrase as you say it, truly believing that Allah is the source of all guidance and protection.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful way to start your day with a spiritual anchor. By thanking Allah for waking you, you acknowledge His power over life and death, fostering humility. Seeking the 'good of the day' and 'good of what follows' encompasses all aspects of your life, from personal well-being to your interactions and responsibilities. Seeking refuge from evil protects you from unseen harm and negative influences. The specific request for benefit from the Quran and divine teaching equips you with spiritual and practical wisdom for making sound decisions. It aligns your day with Allah's will and invokes His blessings (barakah), making even ordinary actions significant.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Al-Bara' bin 'Azib that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When you go to your bed, perform Wudu as you do for prayer, then lie on your right side and say: Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayka, wa fawwadtu amri ilayka, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayka, wa alja'tu zahrli ilayka, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayka, la malja'a wa la manja minka illa ilayka. Amantu bikitabik-alladhi anzalta wa bi Nabiyyik-alladhi arsalta. (O Allah, I have submitted my soul to You, and entrusted my affair to You, and turned my face towards You, and have clung to You, hoping in You and fearing You. There is no refuge or safe haven from You except in You. I have believed in Your Book which You revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You sent.) Then if you die, you will die in a state of pure natural faith (fitrah). Let these words be the last you speak. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6311, Sahih Muslim 168). The dua mentioned in this entry for waking up includes thanking Allah for reviving us, which is also found in Sahih Muslim 1162. The extended supplication for the day's guidance is a meaningful addition inspired by the general request for guidance and knowledge in the Quran and Sunnah, making it a comprehensive supplication for decision-making.
