Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

All praise is due to Allah, Who brought us back to life after giving us death, and to Him is the resurrection.

Alhamdulillahilladhee ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilaihin-nushoor

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately upon waking up in the morning. It sets the tone for the day, acknowledging Allah's power over life and death and His ultimate sovereignty.

How to Read

Recite this once with sincerity and mindfulness. Reflect on the meaning of being brought back to life each morning, a fresh opportunity to live according to Allah's guidance. This gratitude naturally inclines the heart towards seeking what is pleasing to Him, including avoiding what He has forbidden, such as innovation in His religion.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is the first expression of gratitude upon waking, acknowledging Allah's greatest blessings: life and the chance to worship Him. By starting the day with this recognition of Allah's authority and our return to Him, our hearts are naturally oriented towards seeking His pleasure. This includes a conscious effort to follow the Sunnah and avoid Bid'ah, as we understand that our life is a trust and our deeds are presented to Allah. The awareness that 'to Him is the resurrection' instills a sense of accountability, encouraging us to live each day in a manner that pleases our Creator and adheres to the pure path taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Source & Authentication

‘Ubâdah ibn al-Sâmit (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever wakes up at night and says: 'Lâ ilâha illâ Allâh, wahdahu lâ sharîka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa ‘alâ kulli shay’in qadîr. SubhânAllâh, wal-ḥamdu lillâh, wa lâ ilâha illâ Allâh, wa Allâhu Akbar. Wa lâ ḥawla wa lâ quwwata illâ billâhil-‘aliyyil-‘aẓîm.' (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things. Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. And there is no might nor power except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great).' Then he says: 'Rabbighfir lî' (O Lord, forgive me), or he supplicates, it will be accepted from him. If he performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted." Narrated by Al-Bukhari. (Note: The dua requested in the prompt is for waking up, not for waking during the night. The primary dua for waking is cited below). Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When the Prophet (ﷺ) woke up, he used to say: 'Praise be to Allah Who has given us life after death, and it is to Him that we are to be raised.'"
