Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَآ أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ ٱلنُّشُورُ

All praise is for Allah, who brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Al-hamdulillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilaihin-nushur

When to Read

This is the first thing to say immediately upon waking from sleep, before even moving or opening your eyes fully. It sets the tone for your entire day, acknowledging Allah's power over life and death and His ultimate sovereignty.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity and a heartfelt sense of gratitude as you become conscious. Reflect on the profound meaning of being brought back to life each morning, a sign of Allah's continuous blessing and power. The practice is to say it aloud, though if you are in a situation where that's not appropriate, reciting it internally with the same intention is valid.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a fundamental way to begin the day with remembrance of Allah. It serves as a powerful reminder of our dependence on Him for life itself, and His absolute control over our existence and return. By starting with gratitude, we invite Allah's blessings upon our day and strengthen our intention to live it in accordance with His will and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ. It cultivates humility and a constant awareness of Allah's presence and power, which naturally guides us towards righteous actions and following the prophetic way.

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ got up for the night (to pray), he would say: 'Allahu Akbar! Glory be to Allah! Praise be to Allah! There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest! (He would also say:) 'I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, from the evil of the wind, from the evil of my possessions, and from the evil of my children.' Then he would say: 'O Allah! Glory be to You and praise be to You! I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance.' And when he woke up from sleep at night, he would say: 'Praise be to Allah, who has given us life after death, and to Him is the return.' And when he finished reading the surah, he would say the Takbir and then bow, and while bowing he would recite: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.' And when he raised his head from bowing, he would say: 'Allah hears him who praises Him.' Then he would say: 'O Allah, our Lord, to You be praise.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And while prostrating, he would say: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' And when he raised his head from prostration, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive me.' And he would repeat this four times. (And when he got up in the morning, he would say:) 'Praise be to Allah, who has given us life after death, and to Him is the resurrection.'
