Dua Upon Waking: Remembering the Reckoning

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Praise is to Allah Who revived us after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilaihin-nushoor

When to Read

This is the very first thing you should recite the moment your eyes open upon waking. It sets the tone for your entire day, reminding you of your dependence on Allah and the ultimate return to Him.

How to Read

Recite this truthfully and with sincere gratitude. Feel the weight of the words as you acknowledge Allah's power to give life and bring about the final return. It's a statement of submission to His will. Reflect on the analogy: just as He woke you from sleep (a form of mini-death), He will wake you from your graves on the Day of Judgment.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound recognition of Allah's sovereignty and the cycle of life and death. By uttering it, you acknowledge your dependence on Him for every breath. The inclusion of 'wa ilaihin-nushoor' (and to Him is the resurrection) directly connects waking from sleep to the greater reality of Judgment Day. It instills humility and a constant awareness of accountability, encouraging righteous deeds throughout the day.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Hudhaifa: When the Prophet (ﷺ) wanted to sleep, he would say: 'Bismika amootu wa ahya' (With Your name I die and live), and when he woke up, he would say: 'Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilaihin-nushoor' (Praise is to Allah Who revived us after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).
