Dua Upon Waking: Recalling the Bedouin's Confession of Allah's Greatness

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

All praise is due to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Alhamdulillahi alladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amataana wa ilayhin-nushoor.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately upon waking up from sleep. It's the very first remembrance we should make as our consciousness returns, setting the tone for our day.

How to Read

As soon as you feel yourself waking up, before even moving from your resting place, bring this dua to your lips. Speak it with a sincere heart, reflecting on the immense blessing of being given another chance at life.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates profound gratitude for life, which is a loan from Allah. It acknowledges His absolute power over life and death, reminding us of our inevitable return to Him. By starting our day with this, we are orienting ourselves towards our Creator and recognizing His sovereignty over all things, just like that bedouin who was humbled by the Prophet's ﷺ teaching.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ got up for night prayer, he would say: Allahu Akbar (the Most Great)! (The Lord) of the heavens and the earth, Lord of all that is in them. And then he would say: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, the Lord of all that is in them. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, and of all that is in them. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth and of all that is in them. He would then say: O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and of what they overshadow, Lord of the earth and of what it carries, Lord of the devils and of those whom they mislead, Lord of the wind and of what it blows about! I seek refuge in You from the evil of this my house (or, from the evil of this my community). Then he would pray. Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib: The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you go to bed, perform Wudu' just as you perform it for the prayer, and then lie on your right side and say: 'Allahumma inni aslamtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawwadtu amri ilaika, wa alja'tu thahri ilaika raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la malja'a wala manja minka illa ilaika. Amantu bikitabika alladhi anzalta wa nabiyyika alladhi arsalta.' (O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and turned my face towards You, seeking refuge in You out of love for You and fear of You. None can provide refuge from You except You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.) If you die that night, you will die upon Al-Fitra (natural disposition). And if you wake up, you will wake up with goodness." And he added: "Let these words be your last utterance (when you go to bed)." Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ said, "When any one of you wakes up, he should say: Praise be to Allah Who has given us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the All-Coming-Back (Resurrection)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306) This passage is a compilation of hadith related to waking and sleeping. The specific dua for waking up is highlighted in the last cited hadith, attributed to Abu Huraira.
