When to Read

This dua is recited immediately upon waking up in the morning. It sets the tone for the day, acknowledging Allah's power over life and death, and His ultimate plan. This acknowledgment is the first step in approaching any challenges with a patient heart, recognizing that our return is to Him and He is in control.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full awareness of its meaning. It's a direct statement of gratitude and acceptance of Allah's decree. The act of waking is a gift, a new opportunity to strive and face whatever the day brings, including difficulties, with a grateful and patient spirit.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon waking is a Sunnah practice that fosters gratitude and acknowledges Allah's sovereignty. It reminds us that our lives are on loan from Allah, and that our ultimate return is to Him. This perspective shift is foundational for building patience. When we understand that our lives and deaths are in Allah's hands, and that hardship is part of His plan, it becomes easier to accept His decree with steadfastness and resilience. It prepares the heart to meet the day's trials not with despair, but with the strength that comes from tawakkul (reliance on Allah).

Narrated Hudhaifah: Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) got up for the night vigil (Tahajjud prayer), he would say: 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). Then he would say: 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah). He would say three times: 'La ilaha illallah al-Azim al-Halim. La ilaha illallah Rabb al-Arsh al-Azim. La ilaha illallah Rabb al-Samawat wa Rabb al-Ard wa Rabb al-Arsh al-Karim.' (There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne). Then he would praise Allah and glorify Him. He would say: 'Al-hamdu lillah Rabb al-'alamin' (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds). He would supplicate for the sake of his need, and say: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bi-hamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance). And when he would wake up from sleep, he would say: 'Al-hamdu lillah alladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilayhin-nushoor.' (All praise is due to Allah, Who revived us after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).
