Narrated by Al-Bara' bin 'Azib: (The last part of the hadith is) The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'If you go to your bed, you should recite the verse of Allah's Book (i.e. Ayatul Kursi): 'Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa Al-Hayyul Qaiyum.' (2.255) Till the end of the verse. If you recite it, Allah will appoint a guard for you who will not leave you, and Satan will not come near you till you wake up in the morning.' Al-Bara' added: 'This hadith is related (from the Prophet) concerning the virtue of this verse.' Narrated by Al-Bara': The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me, 'When you intend to go to bed, you should say: 'Allahumma qini 'adhikaba yawma tab'athu 'ibadak.' (O Allah! Save me from Your punishment on the day when You resurrect all Your slaves.)' Al-Bara' said: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) and I slept in a hut one night. I woke up and found the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting 'Allahumma qini 'adhikaba yawma tab'athu 'ibadak.' until the end of the verse. Then he said, 'O Allah! Protect me with Islam in the daytime and at night, and do not make me miserable or subject me to any calamity on account of worldly things.' He then said to me: 'O Al-Bara'! Do you know the supplication the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite before going to sleep?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Recite: 'Allahumma aslimtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawwadtu amri ilaika, wa alja'tu thahri ilaika raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la malja'a wala manja minka illa ilaika. Amantu bikitabikalladhi anzalta wa bi Nabiyyikalladhi arsalta.' (O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and turned my face towards You with hope and fear, and there is no refuge or safety from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.)' Then he said, 'If you die that night, you will die in the state of the natural creed (Islam). So, make this the last of your words.' Al-Bara' added: 'When morning came, I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he asked me, 'O Al-Bara'! How did you spend the night?' I informed him that I had recited the supplication, and asked him: 'What about the verse which we recite when we wake up in the morning?' He said, 'If you wake up and recite it, you should say: 'Al-hamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amana wa ilahin-nushur.' (All the praises are for Allah Who brought us back to life after He had made us die, and to Him is the gathering.)' This is a narration from Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith number 6306, which includes the specific dua for waking up.
