Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatanaa wa ilaihin-nushoor
When to Read
This dua is recited immediately upon waking up in the morning. It's the very first thing we should say, setting the tone for our day. As we greet the new day, we are acknowledging Allah's power over life and death, and with that gratitude, we can then ask Him for His blessings in our endeavors, including seeking a permissible livelihood.
How to Read
Recite this with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude for the gift of another day. Understand that waking is a metaphor for the ultimate return to Allah, and this life is a test. By starting with this acknowledgment, you are placing your trust in Allah for all aspects of your day, including your work and provision.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ practice upon waking. It is a declaration of faith and an acknowledgment of Allah's sovereignty. By starting your day with gratitude for life itself, you are seeking Allah's favor and help for whatever the day holds. Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ got up for night prayer, he would say: Allah is the Greatest! Glory be to Allah! Much praise be to Allah! Far be it from You, O Lord! I betake myself to Thee against the wrath of the evil one and against the evil of the enemies. O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth, who art the Guardian of all that is in them, visible and invisible, I beseech Thee O Allah, the Knower of the unseen and the visible, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, to make me contented with what You have given me. I betake myself to Thee for protection against the evil in myself and against the evil of the devil and against the things that may befall me. And I acknowledge Your bounties and confess my sins. So forgive me, for none can forgive sins but You. He (Hudhaifa) added: And when he woke up from sleep, he would say: All praise is for Allah, who brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the return. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312)
