Praise be to Allah, Who gave us life after death, and to Him is the Resurrection.

Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amata-na wa ilaihi n-nushoor.

When to Read

This is the fundamental dua recited immediately upon waking up. It sets the tone for the entire day, acknowledging Allah's control over life and death, and prompting us to consider our purpose and responsibilities. By starting with gratitude for life, we are reminded that this life is a trust from Allah, and with that trust comes the obligation to fulfill our duties towards Him and His creation.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere gratitude and a mindful heart. As you say it, reflect on the blessing of waking up, the breath in your lungs, and the opportunities this new day presents. Consider it a prompt to think about how you can be a positive force for others, fulfilling the rights due to your family, neighbors, colleagues, and indeed all of Allah's creation, both human and otherwise. This isn't just about saying words; it's about internalizing the meaning and letting it shape your intentions for the day.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua serves as a cornerstone of gratitude, acknowledging the ultimate power of Allah over life and death. It fosters a sense of humility and dependence on Him. More importantly, by recognizing that we have been 'given life again,' it imbues us with a renewed sense of responsibility. This life is not for idle amusement; it's an opportunity to serve Allah by serving His creation. Waking up with this intention encourages us to be mindful of our actions, words, and their impact on others, pushing us to fulfill the trusts Allah has placed upon us, whether it's caring for our family, contributing positively to society, or showing kindness to all living beings. It is a powerful reminder to live each day with purpose and accountability.

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) got up for night prayer, he would say: Allah is the Greatest! Glory be to Allah! Your praises be to Allah! There is no god but Allah! I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. From his evil, from his instigation, from his arrogance and from his poetry. And when he got up in the morning he would say: Praise be to Allah, Who gave us life after death, and to Him is the final destination. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312). While the full hadith describes various *dhikr* for waking, this specific phrase is the foundational dua acknowledging the gift of life upon waking, which naturally leads to considering how to use that life constructively.
