اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي.
O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, protect me (or grant me well-being), and provide for me.
Allahumma ighfir li warhamni wahdini wa 'afini warzuqni.
When to Read
This beautiful, comprehensive dua is recommended to be recited after waking up. It sets a tone of humility and reliance on Allah for the entire day, encompassing spiritual, physical, and worldly needs. Making this intention upon waking can also foster a mindset of gratitude and a desire to carry that into our interactions with others.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction after you have woken up. You can say it while still in bed or after you have gotten up. Focus on the meaning of each request, asking Allah for His boundless forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being, and provision. Reflecting on these needs can help you approach the day with a humble heart.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, though brief, is incredibly encompassing. By asking for forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being, and provision, we are essentially covering all aspects of a fulfilling life in this world and the next. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, highlighting its immense value. While this specific wording isn't directly linked to an explicit command to forgive others upon waking, the general principle of seeking Allah's mercy and guidance encourages us to adopt merciful traits ourselves. A heart that seeks Allah's forgiveness is more likely to offer forgiveness to His creation. As Allah says: 'And let them pardon and overlook. Would that you did not associate with Allah anything, but Allah forgives whom He wills. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.' (Surah An-Nur 24:22)

Narrated Tariq ibn Ashyam: I said to Safwan ibn Assal: 'Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say when he set out on a journey: O Allah, the supporter of the travellers and the vicegerent over the family and wealth... And when he returned, he used to say: We are returning with repentance, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord. And he commanded us to say: O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day and the good of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, sustenance that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.' (A similar hadith mentioning waking up states:) When one of you wakes up in the morning, let him say: O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, sustenance that is pure, and deeds that are accepted. And when he wakes up in the evening, let him say the like of that. (This version in Sahih Muslim 2697 is phrased as:) The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say when we wake up: Allahumma ighfir li warhamni wahdini wa 'afini warzuqni. (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, protect me, and provide for me.)
