Dua for Waking Up with Readiness to Repent

Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

All praise is for Allah, Who brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilaihin-nushoor.

When to Read

Immediately upon waking up, before getting out of bed or engaging in any other activity. This is the first action the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would do upon waking.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincere gratitude to Allah for granting you another day. Reflect on the meaning: Allah is the one who gives life and causes death, and our ultimate return is to Him. This perspective naturally fosters humility and a desire to live the new day in obedience. The wording is straightforward, so focus on the intention and presence of heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is more than just words; it's a profound acknowledgment of Allah's power over life and death, setting a tone of subservience and thankfulness for the gift of consciousness and another chance. By recognizing our reliance on Him for life, we are more inclined to honor it with good deeds and repentance. It's a foundational step towards a day filled with purpose, reminding us of our accountability and the importance of turning back to Allah whenever we err.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ got up for the night (to pray), he would say: 'Allah is the Greatest! All praise is for Allah. Glory be to Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped but Allah!' Then he would say: 'There is no god but Allah, the King, the Holy! Glory be to Allah! All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds! May none of you mention anything except that which is good and worthy. Then he would say: 'O Allah, forgive me my sins and grant me salvation and have mercy on me and guide me to the best of conduct and sustenance.' Then he would say: 'O Allah, grant me love of the faith and make it pleasing to my heart and make it my possession, and then make me disliking disbelief, wickedness and disobedience. And make me one of the rightly guided.' Narrated Anas: The Prophet ﷺ said, 'When Allah intends good for His slave, He makes him use the [excess] **[benefit]**.' Someone asked, 'What is the [excess] **[benefit]**?' He said, 'He makes him die (perform good deeds) before his death.' And when Allah intends evil for His slave, He keeps him from repenting until he dies. And when Allah intends good for His slave, He sends an angel to him to wake him up for prayer. Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ said, 'When any one of you wakes up, let him say: 'All praise is due to Allah, Who has restored my soul to me and kept me safe in my body.' And if He recalled the remembrance of Allah, that is the remembrance of Allah. And if He asked for the worldly life and the hereafter, he would mention them. And if he wishes, he may have a bath.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312). The dua provided focuses on thanking Allah for bringing us back to life and acknowledging the resurrection. While the full hadith above contains other morning duas, this specific line is a core part of acknowledging the transition from sleep to wakefulness with a pure heart, conducive to repentance.
