الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Praise is to Allah Who gave us life after death, and to Him is the return.

Alhamdulillahilladhee ahyaana ba'da ma amaatana wa ilaihin-nushoor.

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately upon waking up from sleep. It's the very first expression of gratitude and awareness as you transition from the state of sleep to wakefulness. This moment is crucial because it sets the tone for your entire day, bringing your consciousness back to the reality of life and your purpose.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with a heart full of gratitude. As you say it, reflect on the profound meaning: acknowledging that life itself is a gift from Allah, a renewal after the metaphorical death of sleep. Imagine the stillness of sleep and then the return of your senses and consciousness – all by His grace. This isn't just a phrase; it's a connection to your Creator at the start of your day.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon waking is a beautiful way to thank Allah for the blessing of life and consciousness. It reminds us that our existence, our ability to think, move, and act, is a trust from Him. This gratitude can lead to a more focused and purposeful day, as it grounds you in the reality of your return to Allah. It cultivates mindfulness and appreciation, counteracting any feelings of grogginess or mental fog by immediately connecting you to the ultimate Source of all life and clarity.

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) got up for night prayer, he would say: Allah is the Greatest! Glory be to Allah! How perfect is Allah! How excellent is His praise! (How exalted is His majesty!)" Then he would say: "There is no god but Allah (alone, without partner), to Whom belongs sovereignty and to Whom belongs all praise, and He is Able to do all things. Glory be to Allah. (33 times) Allah is the Greatest. (33 times) Glory be to Allah, the Most Great. (33 times) Then he would say: "O Allah! I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of Hellfire and from the evil of the wealth of life and from the evil of the wealth of the grave." Then he would recite (the following verses): 'Glory be to Allah when you reach the evening and when you rise in the morning. And His is the praise in the heavens and on the earth and in the third night. And ascend from the dead.' (30:17-18). And he would recite: 'O people, worship Allah! You have not been created or resurrected except from one soul, and [also the fact] that you are created from a male and a female, O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you into peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.' (49:13). And he would recite: 'And say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'' (20:114). And he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and pure provision, and accepted deeds.' And he would say: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the great Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, divider of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Torah and the Gospel and the Criterion (of right and wrong)! I seek refuge in You from the evil of all evil the grasp of which You have hold of. O Allah, You are the First, there is nothing before You; You are the Last, there is nothing after You; You are the Apparent, there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden, there is nothing besides You. Relieve us of our debt and enrich us from poverty.' Then he would prostrate and say: 'I seek refuge in my Lord from the evil of my deeds.' He would then supplicate with (the following words): 'O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and in You from You. I cannot count Your praises. You are as You have praised Yourself.' And when he woke up from sleep and returned to his bed, he would say: 'Praise is to Allah Who gave us life after death, and to Him is the return.'
