The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When you wake up in the morning, say: Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatanaa wa ilaihin-nushoor. When you go to sleep, say: 'O Allah, I commit my affair to You, I turn my face to You, and I entrust my back to You, hoping in You and fearing You. There is no refuge nor safety from You except towards You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.' And if you die on that night, you will die upon the Fitrah (natural disposition). Make these the last words you say.' The narrator said: 'When he (the Prophet) was on his deathbed, I was with him and he started saying that dua. I said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, should I not say it and recite it to you just as you recited it to me?' He said: 'No, for indeed the most beloved of you to me is the one who is the most eloquent in reciting it to me, and he did not say anything except that he said it.' So when it was morning, he (the Prophet) woke up and he was well, and he said: 'I said to Allah's Messenger (about the dua for sleeping): 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I did not say it last night.' He said: 'And what prevented you?' I said: 'I feared that the soul would be taken away.' He said: 'Your life is between the two eids (sleep and waking). So when you wake up, say: All praise is due to Allah, who has brought us back to life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312)
