Waking Up
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6312

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Praise is to Allah who brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Al-hamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amata-na wa ilaihin-nushur.

When to Read

This is the primary dua recited immediately upon waking up. Its recitation sets a mindful tone for the start of the day, reminding us of Allah's power over life and death, and preparing our hearts to acknowledge His blessings. For those struggling with procrastination, this act of gratitude and acknowledgment can be the very first step in breaking free from inertia. Instead of hitting snooze or scrolling mindlessly, consciously engaging with this remembrance can shift your focus from the burden of tasks to the gift of a new day.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely upon realizing you are awake. It's a moment of quiet reflection before engaging with the day's demands. Focus on the meaning: acknowledging that waking is a new lease on life granted by Allah, and that our return to Him is certain. This mindset fosters appreciation and can counter feelings of dread associated with facing tasks.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is more than just words; it's an affirmation of faith and a practical tool for a positive mindset. By starting the day with gratitude, we acknowledge Allah's grace in granting us another opportunity. This can powerfully counter the lethargic feelings that often fuel procrastination. When we remember that our very existence and return to Allah are gifts, the day's challenges can seem more manageable, and the urge to delay them might lessen. It's about shifting our perspective from 'I have to do things' to 'I am blessed to be able to do things.'
