Virtues & Benefits

Saying this dua upon waking is a powerful way to start your day with gratitude. It reminds us that our very breath and ability to experience life are gifts from Allah. By acknowledging His power over life and death, we cultivate humility and recognize our complete dependence on Him. This practice helps shift our focus from worldly concerns to our ultimate return to our Creator, fostering a sense of purpose and accountability throughout the day. It's a beautiful affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) right at the beginning of our waking moments.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "When you go to your bed, take the ablution which you take for Salat (prayer). Then lie down on your right side and say: 'O Allah, I have surrendered myself to You, and have turned my face to You, and have committed my affairs to You, and have caused my back to lean on You, fearing You and hoping for Your forgiveness. There is no refuge nor shelter to escape from You except by turning to You.' Then (if you die) you will die in the fittest state on which we have created the people. And (if you survive) you will have the blessing of the morning (i.e. good). Make this the last utterance." Al-Bara' added: "I said to him (the Prophet), 'O Messenger of Allah, if I remain alive till the morning, would it not be proper that I should get up and praise Allah and glorify Him?' So, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) remained silent for a while and then said, 'Allah has said (in the Quran): 'Allah is the Protector and He is the Most Merciful of all merciful ones' (12:64).' Then Al-Bara' recited: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyaana ba'da ma amaatanaa wa ilaihin-nushoor.' (All praise is due to Allah, Who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.)"
