Dua & Sunnah

O Allah, Open Our Hearts to Understanding Your Deen and Following the Sunnah

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 771

O Allah, open upon us the openings of those who know, do not make us weak in knowledge, do not deprive us of wisdom, inspire us with our right guidance, and protect us from the evils of our souls.

Allahumma-ftah 'alayna futuh al-'arifeen wa la tu'jizna 'ilman wa la tahrimna hikmatan wa alhimna rushdana wa 'awwidhna min shururi anfusina

When to Read

This dua is perfect for reciting before starting any study of Islamic knowledge, seeking to understand the Quran and Sunnah, or when you feel a lack of clarity or implementation in your practice. It’s particularly fitting when we, as an Ummah, are collectively trying to reconnect with and live by the Sunnah.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us. Believe that Allah has the power to grant you understanding and wisdom. Make it a habit, especially at the start of your day or when embarking on learning.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication asks Allah for the profound understanding that comes from true knowledge ('futuh al-'arifeen'), protection against being overwhelmed or unable to grasp knowledge, and the bestowal of wisdom in applying that knowledge. It also seeks protection from our own inner shortcomings, which is crucial for sincere practice. The Prophet ﷺ himself used to recite this dua, indicating its immense importance.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them this Dua in the same way that he taught them the Quran, saying: 'Allahumma-ftah 'alayna futuh al-'arifeen wa la tu'jizna 'ilman wa la tahrimna hikmatan wa alhimna rushdana wa 'awwidhna min shururi anfusina.' (O Allah, open upon us the openings of those who know, do not make us weak in knowledge, do not deprive us of wisdom, inspire us with our right guidance, and protect us from the evils of our souls.)
