Dua for the Spiritual Renewal of the Ummah in Ramadan

For the Ummah
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3451

O Allah, usher it in upon us with security and faith, safety and Islam, and success in what You love and approve of. My Lord and your Lord is Allah. May it be a crescent of goodness and guidance.

Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-imani, was-salamati wal-islami, wat-tawfiqi lima tuhibbu wa tarda, Rabbi wa Rabbuk-Allah, hilalu khairin wa rushdin.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is traditionally recited upon sighting the new crescent moon, marking the beginning of Ramadan. However, its essence – seeking security, faith, safety, Islam, and divine guidance – is relevant throughout the month. We can adapt its spirit to make continuous supplication for ourselves and the entire Ummah, especially during the blessed nights and days of Ramadan.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a hopeful heart, directing your plea to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Visualize the Ummah as a whole, from east to west, benefiting from spiritual renewal. It's a prayer for collective well-being, so fostering a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood while reciting it enhances its power.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses profound requests. 'Security and faith' (الأمن والإيمان) are foundations of a strong believer. 'Safety and Islam' (السلامة والإسلام) highlight the desire for physical and spiritual well-being within the framework of our deen. 'Success in what You love and approve of' (التوفيق لما تحب وترضى) is the ultimate aspiration – to align our lives with Allah's pleasure. By invoking Allah as 'My Lord and your Lord' (ربي وربك الله), we affirm Tawhid. The prayer for a 'crescent of goodness and guidance' (هلال خير ورشد) sets a positive tone for the entire month, seeking Allah's blessings for the Ummah's spiritual journey.

Narrated Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ used to recite the following dua when the crescent moon appeared: اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْأَمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ، وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ، وَالتَّوْفِيقِ لِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى، رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ، هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ (O Allah, usher it in upon us with security and faith, safety and Islam, and success in what You love and approve of. My Lord and your Lord is Allah. May it be a crescent of goodness and guidance.) *Reference: Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3451*
