Narrated Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): A man of Muzaynah came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I cannot afford to get married.' He said, 'Then go and find a shield.' He said, 'I cannot afford that either.' He said, 'Then find one and wear it, for by Allah, in whose hand is my soul, a man will surely wear a shield so that he is not hit by an arrow, and he will not be hit by it, and he will not be hit by a stone, and he will not be hit by a sword.' Then he said, 'O Ali, what prevents you and al-Hasan and al-Husayn from getting married?' Ali said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what should we use as a dowry?' He said, 'What do you have?' He said, 'I have nothing.' Then Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: 'O Ali, say: اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ (Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak).' (O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me by Your grace, so that I may not need anyone other than You). Ali said: 'Then the Prophet ﷺ recited it to me and supplicated for us.'
