Dua for Relief from Famine and Drought

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1028

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This powerful dua is specifically for times of intense need, particularly during periods of drought and famine. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this supplication with great earnestness when the land was parched and people were suffering from lack of water and food. It's a direct plea to Allah, the Giver of Sustenance, when all other means seem to have failed. We can raise our hands and make this sincere dua, especially during the congregational prayers for rain (Salat al-Istisqa) or at any time we witness the severe effects of drought.

How to Read

This dua is typically recited multiple times, as indicated by the repetition in the hadith. It's an expression of dire need and complete reliance on Allah. Facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) can add to the reverence, though it's not strictly required for all duas. Raising one's hands while making dua is a Sunnah, especially in supplications for rain. The sincerity and earnestness of the heart are paramount; imagine the desperation of the people and the land crying out for Allah's mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a direct manifestation of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). By turning to Allah in times of hardship, we acknowledge His absolute power over all creation, including the heavens and the earth. It reminds us that sustenance and relief come from Him alone. The Prophet's ﷺ repeated invocation emphasizes the gravity of the situation and the immense mercy of Allah, who is Al-Ghaith (The Reliever of Distress). Making such dua's with certainty in Allah's response can bring about immense relief and blessings, as the Prophet ﷺ said, 'There is no one more zealous than Allah when His servant asks Him for good.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6343).

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man entered the mosque on a Friday and the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon. The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the camels are dying, the roads are destroyed, and the children are hungry.' So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain. O Allah, grant us rain.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1028)
