Dua for Muslim Scholars and Leaders

For the Ummah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3063

اللَّهُمَّ وَلِّ أُمُورَنَا خِيَارَنَا، وَلَا تُوَلِّ أُمُورَنَا شِرَارَنَا

O Allah, entrust our affairs to our best individuals, and do not entrust our affairs to our wicked individuals.

Allahumma walli umurana khiyarana, wa la tuwalli umurana shirarana

When to Read

This is a profound supplication to make when the community is choosing or has chosen leaders, or when contemplating the state of leadership within the Ummah. It's particularly relevant during times of elections, appointments, or when discussing the qualities of good leadership. We can also make this dua generally for the well-being and guidance of those in positions of influence, whether they are religious scholars, political leaders, or heads of families.

How to Read

This dua can be recited at any time, but it is especially potent when made with sincerity and conviction. Begin by praising Allah and sending salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible, and pour your heart out to Allah. Believe that He hears your dua and has the power to accept it. You can repeat it multiple times and reflect on its meaning as you say it.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua seeks Allah's divine intervention in placing righteous and capable individuals in positions of leadership. When good people lead, the community thrives, justice prevails, and people are guided towards what is beneficial. Conversely, when the wicked are in charge, corruption, oppression, and misguidance often follow. Making this dua is a recognition of our own limitations and a reliance on Allah's wisdom and justice in selecting those who will guide and shape our collective destiny.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Allahumma walli umurana khiyarana, wa la tuwalli umurana shirarana.' (O Allah, entrust our affairs to our best individuals, and do not entrust our affairs to our wicked individuals.)
