اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ.
O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment, and I seek refuge in You from evil.
Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina, wa a'udhu bika minash-sharr.
When to Read
This is a profound supplication that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite regularly, especially during times of uncertainty, temptation, or when the Ummah faces widespread trials (fitnah). It's beneficial to make this dua each morning after Fajr prayer, as it sets the tone for seeking Allah's protection and guidance throughout the day. It is also particularly relevant when we witness or hear about trials affecting the Muslim community globally.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on its meaning. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications. Understand that 'al-huda' encompasses knowledge and following the right path, 'at-tuqa' is guarding against sin through awareness of Allah, 'al-'afaf' is modesty and abstaining from what is forbidden, and 'al-ghina' is contentment with what Allah has provided. Seeking refuge from 'ash-sharr' means protection from all forms of evil, both internal and external.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request for well-being in this life and the next. By asking for guidance (huda), we seek to be directed to the truth and act upon it. Piety (tuqa) is the foundation of a righteous life, protecting us from sin. Chastity ('afaf) safeguards our honour and purity. Contentment (ghina) grants us peace of heart, freeing us from the endless pursuit of worldly possessions. Seeking refuge from evil protects us from temptations, sins, and harmful influences that can afflict individuals and the Ummah as a whole, especially during fitnah.
