Dua When Your Vehicle Breaks Down While Traveling

Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2709

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of it (the vehicle) and the evil of what is in it. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan and the evil of anything that travels.

Bismillah, a'udhu billahi min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha. A'udhu billahi min sharri-sh-shaytani wa min sharri-s-sayyar.

When to Read

This dua is specifically for when you are riding a vehicle – whether it’s a car, bus, train, or even a boat – and you experience a problem or it breaks down. It's a prayer for protection when you find yourself in a vulnerable situation during travel.

How to Read

When your vehicle breaks down or you sense a problem, pause for a moment. Facing the direction of the vehicle (or simply towards it), recite this dua with sincerity and full awareness of its meaning. It's an acknowledgment of Allah's power over all situations and a plea for His protection. The first part, 'Bismillah,' acknowledges Allah's name in starting any action, even when facing a problem. The second part, 'a'udhu billahi min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha,' specifically seeks refuge from the vehicle itself and its issues. The final part, 'A'udhu billahi min sharri-sh-shaytani wa min sharri-s-sayyar,' broadens the protection to include Satan's influence and any other potential dangers associated with the breakdown.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua provides a sense of peace and security by turning to Allah in times of unexpected trouble. It's a practical application of tawakkul (reliance on Allah) while taking necessary steps to address the mechanical issue. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to shield us from potential harm and mischief, reminding us that even in material breakdowns, our ultimate refuge is Allah. It's a way to transform a potentially stressful event into an opportunity for remembrance and connection with our Creator.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions du'as for various occasions. Abdullah bin 'Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) intended to travel, he would say: 'O Allah, the Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of everything and its Controller, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of the devil and his associates.' And he would say: 'O Allah, make easy for me my journey and let me represent my family well.' When he returned, he would say these same words (of supplication) and say: 'We are returning, repenting to our Lord, worshipping and praising Him.' In another narration for riding a mount: 'Bismillah, a'udhu billahi min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha. A'udhu billahi min sharri-sh-shaytani wa min sharri-s-sayyar.' (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of it and the evil of what is in it. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan and the evil of anything that travels.)
