Sahih HadithBook 13: The Book of Pilgrimage (Kitab Al-Hajj) 1342

O Allah, I ask of You in this journey righteousness and piety, and such deeds as are pleasing to You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and make the distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the One who looks after the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, from seeing sorrowful sights, and from a bad turn in wealth and family. And when he returned, he would say these words and add to them: We are returners, repenters, worshippers, and to our Lord we are thankful.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi safari hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi lana al-ard. Allahumma anta as-sahibu fis-safari wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari wa ka'abatil-mandhari wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli. Wa idha raja'a qalahunna wa zad fi-hinna: Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li-rabbina hamidun.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when embarking on a journey, whether for Hajj, Umrah, visiting family, business, or any other permissible purpose. It's meant to be said just as you are setting off.

How to Read

It's recommended to recite this dua with sincere intention and a clear heart, seeking Allah's pleasure above all else. Turn to the Qiblah (direction of prayer) as you begin your journey if possible. Raise your hands in supplication as you would in prayer. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the reliance you are placing on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates the essence of travelling with a noble purpose. By asking for 'righteousness and piety' and 'deeds that are pleasing to You,' you are aligning your journey with Allah's will. The dua also acknowledges our reliance on Allah for safety and ease during travel, asking Him to 'make this journey easy' and 'make the distance short.' Seeking refuge from 'hardships,' 'sorrowful sights,' and 'a bad turn' highlights our vulnerability and need for divine protection. Furthermore, the concluding phrases upon return—'We are returners, repenters, worshippers, and to our Lord we are thankful'—demonstrate a conscious return to devotion after the journey, a beautiful reminder of our ultimate purpose.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say, when he set out on a journey: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi safari hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi lana al-ard. Allahumma anta as-sahibu fis-safari wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari wa ka'abatil-mandhari wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli. And when he returned, he would say these words and add to them: Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li-rabbina hamidun.
