Dua for Travel: Finding Comfort Away from Home

Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, the sorrow of returning home (to bad news), the (regrettable) return to a state (of loss) after having been well-off, the supplication of the oppressed, and the evil sight (concerning family and wealth).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa du'a'il-mazhloomi, wa su'il-mandhari fil-ahli wal-mali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is specifically for when you are embarking on a journey, whether for Hajj, Umrah, work, visiting family, or any other purpose. Reciting it as you begin your travels helps invoke Allah's protection against potential difficulties and emotional distress, including the pangs of homesickness that can arise when you are far from your familiar surroundings and loved ones.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly and with sincere intention as you set out on your journey. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly while supplicating. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection. It's a good practice to say this after reciting the general travel dua (e.g., 'Subhanalladhi sakhara lana hadha...') if you know it, or on its own, before you've truly left your home's vicinity.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound expression of reliance on Allah. It seeks protection not only from physical hardships and the distress of seeing one's family and wealth in a bad state upon return, but also from the deep emotional pain of 'ka'abatil-munqalabi' – the sorrow upon returning to a negative situation or simply the general sadness and homesickness one might feel far from home. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge that true comfort and security are found only with Him, even when we are in unfamiliar lands.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to say when he set out on a military expedition or in any important matter: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa du'a'il-mazhloomi, wa su'il-mandhari fil-ahli wal-mali. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, the sorrow of returning home, the regrettable return to a state after having been well-off, the supplication of the oppressed, and the evil sight concerning family and wealth).'
