Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it on our own. And surely, we are to return to our Lord. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for goodness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the One Who will look after the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, from seeing a sad sight, and from an evil outcome in wealth and family. And when he returned, he would say these words, saying: Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, I ask Allah for forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance.

Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinina, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal 'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fis-safari, wal-khalifatu fil-ahli.

This beautiful supplication is best recited right before or as one begins their journey. Recite it with sincerity, a mindful heart, and a sense of reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon starting a journey ensures Allah's companionship and protection. The initial part, 'Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha...', is a profound expression of gratitude for the means of travel, acknowledging that nothing is possible without His divine assistance. The latter part, 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika...', is a shield against the common difficulties and unpleasant surprises that can arise during travel, safeguarding one's wealth and family left behind. Furthermore, recognizing Allah's signs while traveling is a pathway to increased faith and knowledge, as the Quran encourages us to travel and observe: 'Say: Travel through the earth and see how He originated creation...' (An-Naml 27:20).

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When you ascend (a height), you glorify Allah by saying 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), and when you descend, you glorify Allah by saying 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah). When Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) descended from a high place, he would glorify Allah by saying 'Subhan Allah' three times and would say: 'Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could not have accomplished it on our own. And to our Lord, surely, we are returning.' And when he ascended (a height), he would glorify Allah by saying 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) three times and would say: 'Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could not have accomplished it on our own. And to our Lord, surely, we are returning.' Narrated by Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): We were with the Prophet (ﷺ) on a journey, and when we ascended, we said: 'Allahu Akbar', and when we descended, we said: 'Subhan Allah.'
