Travel
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6368

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming debt, the overwhelming enemy, the overwhelming misery, and the evil of my soul.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni, wa ghalabatil-'aduwwi, wa ghalabatish-shaqa'i, wa khatarin-nafs.

Whether facing financial hardship, the loss of a loved one, or intense personal struggles, this supplication offers solace and a plea for divine protection. It's a prayer to be recited at the start of a journey, during moments of intense worry, or at any point when feeling overwhelmed by life's trials while abroad.

How to Read

Reflect on the meaning of each phrase, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. Speak with conviction, seeking His refuge from these specific hardships, and trust in His mercy. Remembering the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ constant turning to Allah in times of difficulty can enhance the practice.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companions, addresses four significant areas of human struggle: overwhelming debt, overpowering enemies, overwhelming misfortune, and the inherent temptations or negative inclinations of the self. For a traveler, being away from home can amplify these fears. Facing financial ruin far from home, dealing with hostility or danger in a foreign land, experiencing profound sadness and loneliness, or battling inner demons while isolated can be incredibly daunting. This prayer seeks Allah's intervention, offering a sense of peace and security. It reminds us that even in our most vulnerable moments, Allah is the ultimate protector and sustainer.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from these four things: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-ma'tham wa'l-maghram' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt). It was said to him: 'What is the matter with seeking refuge from debt?' He said: 'Indeed, when a man gets into debt, he talks and lies, and makes promises and breaks them.' Then he said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi-l-Qabr, wa 'adhabi-l-Jahannam, wa fitnati-l-Qabr, wa fitnati-l-Ghinan' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of the Hellfire, and the trial of the grave, and the trial of wealth). Then he said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabati-d-dayni wa ghalabati-l-'aduwwi wa ghalabati-sh-shaqa'i wa khatari-n-nafs' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming debt, and the overwhelming enemy, and the overwhelming misery, and the evil of the soul).
