O Allah, I ask You for the good of this journey and the good of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what it contains. O Allah, I ask You for lawful sustenance.
Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhas-safari wa khaira ma fihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni as'alukal-rizqal-halal.
When to Read
This dua is recommended to be recited when embarking on a journey, just as you are setting out. It encapsulates seeking the best from the journey and asking Allah for provision that is pleasing to Him.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, ideally when you are about to depart. Raise your hands slightly if possible, as is customary when making dua. Visualize Allah's protection and provision for you.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua seeks the blessings and safety of the journey itself, asking Allah to steer you away from any harm or difficulty. Crucially, it also includes a specific request for 'lawful sustenance' (al-rizqal-halal), emphasizing the importance of earning and receiving provision in ways that are permissible in Islam, even while traveling. This highlights that our request for sustenance should always be within ethical and religious boundaries.
Source & Authentication
The narration often associated with this dua describes the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaching his companions specific supplications for various occasions. While this exact wording is found in Sunan Ibn Majah and Sunan Abu Dawud and graded Hasan, the principle of seeking good and refuge from evil in travel is a well-established Sunnah. The addition of 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-rizqal-halal' is a profound reminder that even when away from home, our primary concern should be the purity of our earnings.
