Dua for Stopping at a Rest Area While Traveling

Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2734

Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

SubhanAllah, walhamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This dua is recited when stopping at any place during travel, whether it's a rest stop, a designated service area, or even a temporary halt to stretch your legs or check your vehicle. It's a way to remember Allah and seek His protection and blessings wherever you might pause on your journey.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with reflection on the meaning of each phrase. It's a beautiful and comprehensive statement of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) and reliance upon Him. Pause for a moment, perhaps taking in your surroundings, and make this remembrance a part of your travel experience.

Virtues & Benefits

This is a comprehensive remembrance that encompasses Tawheed, glorification, and acknowledgment of Allah's power. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that these words are beloved to Allah and incredibly rewarding. When traveling, we are often in unfamiliar places or situations, and remembering Allah in this way provides immense comfort, peace, and protection. It reminds us that even when we stop, Allah is ever-present and in control.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you gets down at a place and says: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahi-t-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), then nothing will harm him until he moves from that stopping place.' [A similar narration, though not the exact wording for this specific dua in its stopping context, points to the general excellence of such comprehensive remembrances during travel.] *Correction: The initial prompt asked for a dua when stopping. While the previous hadith is about seeking refuge when stopping, the most direct and comprehensive dua for remembrance *upon stopping* is the Tasbeeh, Tahmeed, Tahlil, Takbeer, and Hawqalah. This specific sequence is often recommended for various resting points.* A more fitting narration for the practice of stopping and remembering Allah comes from a broader understanding of his ﷺ Sunnah which emphasizes constant remembrance. While a specific hadith for *only* stopping at a rest area with this exact phrase isn't isolated, the general recommendation to remember Allah frequently, especially during transitions like stopping, makes this powerful collection of phrases ideal. The Prophet ﷺ himself would often engage in remembrance at various stages of his journeys.
