Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

Glory be to Allah Who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves. And to our Lord we are to return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for goodness and piety, and for such deeds as are pleasing to You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and make its distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor among the family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of the journey, from seeing evil sights, and from being a cause of evil in our property and family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from it.

Subhanalladhee sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fee safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal 'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fis-safari, wal-Khaleefatu fil-ahli. Allahumma innee a'udhu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-manthari, wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-maali wal-ahli. Allahumma innee a'udhu bik minhu.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when embarking on a journey, whether for pleasure, necessity, or any other purpose. It's especially poignant when one carries a heavy heart due to leaving loved ones, facing uncertainty, or dealing with personal worries. Saying it as you begin your travel, perhaps as you mount your transport or step out of your home, sets the tone for a protected and spiritually mindful journey.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a conscious understanding of its meaning. It's traditionally recited when mounting a mode of transport. Focus on the plea for Allah's companionship and protection, acknowledging your dependence on Him. The initial part, praising Allah for enabling the travel, should be said with gratitude. The latter part, seeking refuge, should be uttered with earnestness, picturing the potential difficulties you wish to be shielded from. It’s recommended to repeat it three times upon departure.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses gratitude, seeking divine guidance and acceptance of deeds, a plea for ease and shortening of distance (both physical and emotional), and seeking refuge from the hardships and unpleasantness of travel. It acknowledges Allah as our ultimate companion and protector, both during our absence and for our families left behind. Reciting it offers immense peace of mind, especially when traveling with a heavy heart, by transferring the burden of worry to the One Who has complete control.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ intended to set out on a journey, he would say: And when he returned, he would say it, and repeat: 'A'ibuna li-Rabbina ha'iboon, ta'iboon, 'abidoon, li-Rabbina ha'midoon. (We are returning, to our Lord, those who repent, those who worship, and to our Lord, those who praise).
