Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

Glory be to Him Who has subjected this for us, and we could never have attained it ourselves. And to our Lord, surely, we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for goodness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and make its distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, and the evil of sights, and from any change of heart regarding property and family.

Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinina, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibuna. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal 'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fis-safari wal-khalifatu fil- ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-mandhari, wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal- ahli.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when embarking on a journey, whether it's a short trip or a long expedition. It's particularly beneficial to recite it when you are about to board a vehicle or set off on foot, as you are leaving the safety and familiarity of your home.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, recognizing your reliance on Allah for protection and ease. It is generally recited as you begin your journey, often after the initial pronouncements of 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) when mounting a transport or setting off. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, visualizing Allah's protection surrounding you.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses seeking the best of the journey (goodness and piety), asking for the journey itself to be made easy and its distances shortened, and entrusting your family and possessions to Allah's care. It also seeks refuge from common travel troubles: the physical hardships ('wa'tha' as-safar'), unpleasant sights or situations ('ka'abat al-mandhar'), and the misfortune of returning to find one's family or property in a bad state ('su' al-munqalab fil-mal wal-ahl'). It's a complete supplication for physical and spiritual well-being during travel, a time when one is naturally more vulnerable.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mounted his camel for the journey, he would say 'Allahu Akbar' three times, then he would say: 'Glory be to Him Who has subjected this for us, and we could never have attained it ourselves. And to our Lord, surely, we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for goodness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and make its distance short for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, and the evil of sights, and from any change of heart regarding property and family.' And when he returned, he would recite these words and say: 'We return, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord.'
